Environmental Policy
Statement of Commitment
The Ontario Mining Association supports the goal of environmentally sustainable economic development, which ensures that the utilization of resources and the environment today does not damage prospects for their use by future generations.
The OMA requires its members to act responsibly to mitigate any adverse environmental impacts arising from their activities. To this end, each member will endorse this policy and implement it with respect to its own business strategy and operations including exploration, mining, processing and decommissioning.
Statement of Principles
The Ontario Mining Association adopts the principles of the Mining Association of Canada Environmental Policy; therefore, to implement this policy, the member companies of the Ontario Mining Association will:
- assess, plan, construct and operate their facilities in compliance with all applicable legislation providing for the protection of the environment, employees and the public;
- in the absence of legislation, apply cost-effective best management practices to advance environmental protection and to minimize environmental risks;
- maintain an active, continuing, self-monitoring programme to ensure compliance with government and company requirements;
- foster research directed at expanding scientific knowledge of the impact of industry's activities on the environment, of environment/economy linkages, and of improved treatment technologies;
- work pro-actively with government and the public in the development of equitable, cost-effective and realistic laws for the protection of the environment; and
- enhance communications and understanding with governments, employees and the public.
